Architectural Development
Description
Framed by the Curral Hills, the city of Belo Horizonte was projected by engineer Araão Reis in order to become the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. From the original project of diagonal streets, forming courts and regular blocks, and an avenue circulating its perimetre, the city has become a large, contemporary and diversified metropolis. Since its inauguration in 1897, it has revealed neoclassic, neoromantic and neogothic forms, demonstrating the richness and versatility of its present architecture. The European modernist influence can also be seen in the numberless public areas and squares. French architects, master builders and Italian workers represent a large part of the working force which raised the city.
